Accommodation at Warenne Barn

Bedrooms

The four double bedrooms can be organised as twins or doubles as preferred (please notify us in advance). The upstairs rooms have oak floors and en-suite shower-rooms, and the downstairs rooms have limestone floors and adjacent showers/bathroom to provide convenient access during the day without going through a bedroom. All bedrooms also have lovely slit windows adding character and light to the rooms (which formed part of the original building).

All beds have pocket-sprung mattresses. Towels and bedding are provided, and are changed weekly. Spare linen is available should you need it in the meantime.

Living Space

The double aspect living room is situated on the first floor and has wonderful expansive views to east and west. Upstairs is accessed by a bespoke solid oak curved staircase, designed and made by renowned local specialist oak joiners.

There are leather sofas for 8, a television and DVD player, and an electric living flame fire. Off the living room is a small kitchen area for convenient tea and coffee making. Internet access is available by arrangement.

The lighting has been specially designed for us to give a sense of light and space, in addition to the natural light that floods the building from all sides. Even the floor in the living room has glass panels running the full length of each side to give a sense that the floor "floats" above the ground. Glass sliding doors on the each side of the room have glass Juliette balconies which give unrivalled views and a real sense of being "on" the Downs.

History

The Barn was built around the 1870s as a Sussex threshing barn using local materials, particularly flints. Unfortunately it was destroyed by fire in 1991 and we purchased the 3 remaining walls (!) in 1993.

We have spent two years (2008/2010) rebuilding it to the highest standard. Again using local sourced materials and re-using those that we could from the original building. The result is a true replica of the original barn.

Local craftsmen were employed to rebuild the Barn, including a master flintworker who had carried out work on Chichester Cathedral. The Barn is, however, brand new and on the inside this is shown by the very high level of decoration, fittings and facilities. There is oak joinery throughout, with limestone floors downstairs and wide oak floor boards upstairs.

Warenne Barn's Green Credentials

We rebuilt The Warenne Barn using the latest environmental technologies for insulation and heating:

  • An air-source heat pump provides underfloor and water heating.
  • All windows are oak double-glazed and the larger glass doors/windows are argon-filled and tinted, all to aid heat retention and cooling as required.
  • An internal ventilation system keeps the barn cool in summer, and warm in winter using a heat exchanger.
  • Bathroom lights are on automatic on/off sensors.
  • Water is pumped from beneath the chalk from our own borehole in the adjacent paddock. The water is of the highest quality and serves the Barn and our nearby cottage.
